What’s Going On with KDE 4.5.0?

category: KDE 4,Packages,Synergy,Unity author: jmiahman

KDE 4.5.0
Has been finished for a while and is currently being synced to a “safe” directory on the build server at which point the current kde4 directory will be moved too another location and the newly synced folder will replace it. For a week or so the old KDE 4 directory will be kept in a non public place in case there are any issues. If there are no issues then it will be deleted after this period.

This release offers:
kdepim 4.4.5 (4.5 Beta 3 is in Synergy test and more stable then previous versions)
Amarok 2.3.1
Clementine 0.4.2
Qt 4.7 Beta (will soon be updated to Qt 4.7 RC)
BlueDevil (New Bluetooth Management)
Wally 2.4 (Wallpaper Downloader)
and other fun Goodness

A short and final announcement will be made on the mailinglist and here when the sync is done. After the announcement give it time to propagate through the mirrors.

Once sync is complete work will go underway on the Synergy mirrors for 4.5.1.

Synergy 2010 Pre Beta Release (Identity Crisis) with KDE 4.5.0

category: KDE 4,Synergy,Unity author: jmiahman

If you have been wondering about KDE 4.5.0 and Synergy Linux then this email is for you.

As of now I have released one of my nightlies as a Pre Beta Release. It should be a lot better than my last Alpha release (unless you have a Nvidia Card) and has now been tested on multiple machines in multiple environments.

Qemu
Virtual Box
EeePC 70x
MSI Wind (ATI 780G Chipset)

This release still has it’s issues why I’m releasing it as Pre Beta:

Known Issues:
1. Won’t boot with FX5200Go Nvidia Card, Tries to use the Nouvea driver and it segfaults
– This most likely will effect multiple Nvidia Cards but please still test I would like to know if your card works or not.

2. Synergy Installer is not included (but Unity Installer is and installs fine)
3. Has some what of an Identity Crisis with some themes and Artwork

Some Good Stuff:
Memory consumption on my EeePC is only at 145M, Yay!
KDE 4.5.0 Seems stable and previous issues (System Tray, Bug #222) are fixed

Comes with:
Kernel 2.6.33.6
KDE 4.5.0
Bangarang – A multimedia player that _can_ use Nepomuk (disabled by default) to manage multimedia.
Rekonq – A KDE WebKit Based Browser

This Special release is codenamed “Identity Crisis”. Because it has some Unity Artwork in it still that I haven’t removed. I had to rebuild multiple packages after I had a hard drive fail and some of them I didn’t go back and replace the artwork. So if you didn’t like the previous KDE 4 theme Called Touvrea Castle (aka Symply Synergy) then you’ll have the KDE defaults that might look better too you. If you can donate your time to customize KDE and create themes I am more than willing to accept your entries as a possibility to have it as Synergy’s Default KDE theme.

Disclaimer:
Because this is just a test release it only comes in 32Bit. Building a 32Bit ISO is the trickiest (for me on a 64bit host) I know if I am able to get a 32Bit release out then the 64Bit Normally falls into place. Also a 32Bit ISO can run on both 64Bit and 32Bit Arch so I can cover more testers. The final release and near future beta releases will have both archs. Oh yeah and if this ISO kills your cat, dog, or baby dolphin then sorry, use at your own risk.

Yes it can be found on my own slow server, If you like torture:

Synergy Linux Build Server is dead.

category: KDE 4,Packages,Synergy,Unity author: jmiahman

Ouch yeah the title says it all. The worst part is I was in the middle of backing up rpms (haven’t gotten to scripts yet) to my offsite server. I should have ran my backup script much earlier. The Hard drive died. It was the Hitachi DeathStar errr Deskstar.. Actually I can’t complain about it as it was era 2005. Time for a larger faster drive (most likely a redundant raid just haven’t decided what to go with, and some better backup scripts. It’s going to be a bit before I am fully back online. It all depends on when I can get the new drives. I may have to resume some operations on my netbook, that is plenty capable. Kinda crazy when I think about it. Running a webserver off a netbook. This means I start from scratch though, which is a real bummer because I had some stuff I needed to submit to Unity SVN and it’s gone also some kdebuild scripts that was making life a lot easier. This means though my scripts will need to be rewritten, which just means they will end up being friendlier and have more features. I don’t appreciate the time though having to go back and do it all over. I guess that’s my fault though. Sorry if everyone has to wait a week or so, I’ll keep everyone posted. I am still having issue with the System Tray and a kded service maybe it will do me some good to start from scratch and build from their. Here’s to being caught with your pants down for lack of a better analogy.

KDE 4.5.0 Delayed

category: KDE 4,Packages,Synergy,Unity author: jmiahman

If some of you have noticed I have not announce the KDE 4.5.0 release that is on the repository currently nor have I announced it’s safe to test. The reason being is their has been _a lot_ of changes from 4.4.x to 4.5.0. In fact the KDE team has decided to delay the release a week to furthers test and implament patches and fixes that would not have made it into the 4.5.0 release but we very much needed. You can read more about this on Aaron’s blog I fully agree with this decision and wish them the best. The current rpms are usable in the repository but have some quirks already being reported. I plan on waiting this time until the official release is announced instead of trying to get ahead of the game and grabbing the tagged released out of SVN. Thank you all for your patience. I will announce when testing should begin so we can get this rpms moved over to Unity Linux main.

KDE 4.5.0 update

category: Synergy author: jmiahman

Currently KDE packages in the repository are being updated, built and synced. We’re expecting issues if upgrades are done at this time. If you do decide to update please hold off on any bug reports until it’s been announced testing is open for 4.5.0. That announcement will come at the very least on this site and most likely on the Unity Linux forums and ML.

Thanks

Jeremiah

KDE 4.5.0 has been tagged, currently building.

category: KDE 4,Packages,Synergy author: jmiahman

KDE 4.5.0 has been tagged in SVN, so I went a head and ran my upgrade script. Basically it checks the 4.5 branch of SVN for the latest version (right now 4.5.0) and then checks the kde ftp sites for the 4.5.0 folder. If the folder is not found it then proceeds to download the svn, do the proper naming for the source packages, edit the spec files to update the version and then build the packages uploading them to the devel server. Granted there still can be issues with patches that may have been applied up stream so it’s not fully automatic yet, but it sure does make life easier and allow me to focus on other projects like seeing if I Synergy can use tribe, or at least parts of tribe. Please take care in updating to KDE 4.5.0 at this time until it’s announced the update has been complete.

Synergy-Linux.com is Back, Alpha Status

category: Synergy author: jmiahman

And We’re Back!
If you’re visiting the site you may have noticed that you have been redirected to Synergy-Linux.com. I bought back the URL and am now hosting on it. Http://synergy-linux.no-ip.org is still there and will still build pretty much everything, but to lesson the work load and also to increase download and sync speeds I thought it better to move too a faster host. Home DSL is just not cutting it.

Alpha Status
We hit our last major Alpha release, however if this at all makes sense there’s going to still be a few minor releases to get the “base system” up too speed. A few users have ran into issues with missing wireless and video drivers. In newer nightly builds this has been fixed and will be released as Alpha3b, if further additions are needed we may move to Alpha3c but most likely that will be the last release of any Alpha and we’ll move forward with Beta releases from there.
